Alchemic Elementals: Djinn are "spirits of air and fire" (afrits are apparently solely fire-based) and golems are embodiments of earth.

Though also played straight in the third book where he has complex feelings about the cruelties of the government and his own part in it, culminating in his self-sacrifice.
